JOB TITLE: General Laborer

STARTING WAGE

Starting at $16-$20 per hour depending on experience. Wage will increase with experience, training, and/or certification.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

A general laborer does physical labor on job sites. They may prepare sites by cleaning them, loading or unloading materials, and removing hazards. A general laborer may also run some types of equipment, or put together or take apart temporary structures. Laborers may be working in confined spaces or elevated structures to complete their work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate and care for equipment and machines
  • Help equipment operators and other skilled labor when necessary
  • Prep job sites by clearing obstacles and hazards
  • Load or unload materials
  • Put together and take apart temporary structures, such as fencing or barriers
  • Remove, fill, or compact earth
  • Follow instructions from supervisors
  • Assist craft workers as necessary
  • Ready to learn from on-the-job training when appropriate
  • Perform site cleanup

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Education:

No formal qualification is required, although a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Experience:

Similar work experience may be beneficial. Finishing work a bonus.

Other: Licensures or training to operate heavy equipment may be required. Willingness to undergo training if necessary.

JOB TITLE: Digger

STARTING WAGE

Starting at $16-$18 per hour depending on experience. Wage will increase with experience, training, and/or certification.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

A digger does physical labor on job sites. They may prepare sites by cleaning them, loading or unloading materials, and removing hazards. A digger may also run some types of equipment to break up hazards or barriers to work, such as rocks or concrete. Diggers may be working in confined spaces or awkward positions to complete their work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Digging holes, padding ditches, and similar work
  • Helping with setting poles by shoveling, piking, and filling anchor holes
  • Digging trenches, back-filling holes, or compacting earth to prepare the site
  • Clearing undergrowth from right-of-way using hand tools or saws and piling debris to clear a path
  • Performing general cleanup of job sites following job completion
  • Operating jackhammers, pavement breakers, earth tampers, or digging bars to break concrete or rocks
  • Driving truck to job site or to obtain or transport supplies and equipment
  • Using various hand and power tools
  • Obtaining required technical knowledge to use various tools, or computerized machines
  • Carrying or lifting heavy objects as well as squatting, kneeling, bending, or crawling in awkward positions or confined spaces
